Tonne Of Trouble

ON REPORTS of vibrations in the Falcon I thought I'd tell you about the Holden one-tonner I bought in 1978. Being in the tyre game at the time I put fancy wheels and tyres on it, but at 93km/h the tray would vibrate. If I went faster the vibration would disappear, just as it would if I drove at a slower speed. I had the wheels checked and put the standard wheels back on, but it was the same no matter what I did. I changed shocks, the diff, just about everything I could think of without making any difference. Three years later I sold the car and it still wasn't fixed.

MANY things can cause vibration. It could be as simple as poor wheel and tyre balance, which tends to show up at about 100km/h, or it could be the tailshaft, which shows up at a lower speed. Before doing anything drastic you need to check everything is within specification: wheel and tyre balance, tailshaft balance and driveline angles. The latter can be critical. If they are out they will cause a significant vibration.
