Kia GT Stinger striptease continues

The wraps will fully come off the Kia GT Stinger at next week's Detroit motor show, but the Korean carmaker is doing a slow tease in the meantime. We've already seen an outlined birds-eye view and the face, but this latest overhead shot gives a fuller look at the swelling wheelarches of the rear-wheel drive concept -- and the twin bonnets vents for the turbo engine.

We already know those arches are filled with 20-inch alloys dressed with weight-shedding strengthening carbon-fibre inserts, 275/35R20 Pirelli P-Zero performance tyres and Brembo Gran Turismo two-piece cross-drilled rotors with four-piston calipers.

We've also already had a look at its Ignition Yellow face with the Peter Schreyer-designed signature 'tiger mouth' morphed into a low-slung grille surrounded by a glowing bezel, and flanked by LED headlights.

And Kia has also revealed under the bonnet is a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder developing 235kW (33kW more than the 2.0-litre in the current Hyundai Genesis Coupe) but mated to a short-ratio six-speed automatic rather than the Genesis' eight-speed auto.

However while the car could have been seeded by the Genesis, Kia has built it on a custom chassis, with it riding on an independent double wishbone suspension that should give it handling chops.

So are we seeing the start of a sporty halo model for the brand -- although likely to be watered down somewhat for the showroom -- or is it just a design concept? Kia hasn't confirmed either way yet, but we'll be listening closely to what they say at Detroit.

From what we've seen so far, we hope to see this rear-drive sports car join the lineup in the future. After all, Kia has been teasing us with rear-drive sports car concepts for quite a while now: the automaker unveiled the Kia Kee coupe concept in 2007, and then the GT four-door coupe concept in 2011 in Frankfurt. Let's hope the third time's a charm.
