The all-wheel drive CX-5 is the first Mazda to feature the full range of the company's new SKYACTIV Technology.

Mazda is claiming class leading economy for its new CX-5 off roader.

Powered by a new 2.2-litre SKYACTIV-D diesel engine, it delivers fuel economy of 5.7/100km. It also the first diesel to be offered by Mazda with an automatic.  As well as best in class economy, the new engine produces a class-leading 420Nm of torque and 129kW of power.

The all-wheel drive CX-5 is the first Mazda to feature the full range of the company's new SKYACTIV Technology. "We've been keen to add a diesel engine with an automatic transmission to our range for quite some time. The development of the CX-5 and our new SKYACTIV Technology has given us this opportunity and, quite frankly, we can't wait to get it here," Mazda's Alastair Doak said.

"There's certainly demand for a diesel automatic combination, particularly in the SUV segment and with the right powertrain combinations, plus all-new technology and design we're confident that CX-5 has the goods to become one of Australia's most popular SUVs."

  • I don't know why people keep mentioning the Sorrento....it's direct competitor is the Sportage, not the Sorrento. The new diesel version of the Dualis and the Ford Kuga also come out around March. Plenty of competition in the light SUV market

  • A lot of tightwads on this thread.

  • Mazda must price this turbo diesel vehicle well below Sorrento and probably lineball with Tiguan. If it does it will snatch number 1 deservedly.

  • Kia Sorrento isn't in the same class as the CX-5, that would be the Kia Sportage. Their claims are therefore correct.

  • If Mazda wants to grab the No. 1 spot, as they claim, then their CX-5 pricing & range had better be bloody GOOD. And what would the servicing costs for the CX-5 Turbo-diesel be like compared to ,say, the VW Tiguan 103TDI or the Skoda Yeti 103TDI?

  • Kia Sorento has 145kw and 436Nm torque from a 2.2 Diesel ... so I would say that the output is definitely not class leading as claimed.

  • How about a price list and model range. This vehicle is due for release late Feb or early March as I understand it but still no firm figures other than scant marketing blurbs like the above. I am keen to see this car in the flesh. Hope they do a full range of diesel models and not just the top of the line as per KIA.
