We turn the spotlight on the Mitsubishi Challenger LS and answer the important questions, including the biggest -- would you buy one?

We turn the spotlight on the Mitsubishi Challenger LS and answer the important questions, including the biggest -- would you buy one?

What is it?

This is Mitsubishi's second string 4WD to the larger and older Pajero. Unlike the rash of soft road SUVs flooding this segment of the market including the new Nissan Pathfinder, Challenger is the real deal when it comes to off roading. It's basically the Triton ute with a wagon body and five seats.

How much?

Challenger 4WD pricing starts at $42,490. The LS driven is $49,990 in auto only.

What are competitors?

Plenty including the more expensive Toyota Prado, Nissan's new soft road Pathfinder, Kia SorentoSanta FeJeep Grand CherokeeHolden Colorado7 and Territory.

What's under the bonnet?

Power comes from a 2.5-litre, four cylinder turbo diesel with VGT (Variable Geometry Turbo) technology driving all wheels through a selectable 4WD system and a five speed auto. It's good for 131kW/400Nm output -- sufficient to propel the 2.0 tonne plus Challenger with some purpose. It has Super Select 4WD with four modes and Shift-on-the-Fly 2WD to 4WD at speeds up to 100kmh.

How does it go?

Pretty good for a hard core fourbie with a ladder chassis and rigid rear diff. The engine is strong and has plenty ready underfoot but the suspension is soft for smoothing rough tracks so the body leans a bit cornering on the highway.

Is it economical?

The manual low spec' vehicle gets 8.3-litres/100km, this one gets 9.8...

Is it green?

Moderately.

Is it safe?

Four stars with room for improvement.

Is it comfortable?

Very apart from some engine noise intrusion. It negotiates rough roads like they aren't there and will cruise at the limit on the freeway easy-peasy.

Generous level of standard equipment includes a large colour touch screen with voice control functions, Bluetooth phone and audio, leather, satnav, Mitsubishi All Terrain Technology - (a 'drive select' system for off roading) and a reverse camera.

What's it like to drive?

We like it. There's nothing sporty about the Challenger but in the right environment, it doesn't disappoint. The size could be an issue for city driving but it can tow up to 3000kg (braked) -- good for boats and vans.

Is it value for money?

Yes, the competition has crept up in price and passed Challenger for the most part and some of them would be hard pressed to drive down a gravel road. Five seats is an issue in a segment where seven are preferred.

Would we buy one?

Maybe. Would probably go for a dual cab Triton all things considered -- same number of seats.
