"Improved" deal put to Mitsubishi

The Federation of Vehicle Industry Union demands a better deal for the Mitsubishi employees.

The claim, put to Mitsubishi Motors Australia by the Federation of Vehicle Industry Unions, demands 5 1/2 weeks of severance pay and three weeks of loyalty pay, uncapped, for each year of service.

There is also the provision of $500 for financial advice for employees and $1000 for those aged 55 and over. A further $2000 would be available to help workers find new employment.

The claim seeks improvements to the deal put to workers at the company's Lonsdale plant when it closed in 2004.

Those employees were given 4 1/2 weeks of severance pay, capped at 100 weeks, one week of loyalty pay, uncapped, and $300 for financial advice.

The FVIU presented is a new claim to Mitsubishi on Tuesday and the two parties met yesterday. There is another meeting planned for 12.30pm today.

Under the Tonsley Park claim, a worker who has been with the company for 30 years on an average wage of $1000 a week would receive $255,000. An employee of 10 years would receive $85,000.

FVIU state secretary John Camillo said Mitsubishi was offering Tonsley Park workers the Lonsdale deal and was not prepared to negotiate higher severance and loyalty payments at this stage.

However, improved loyalty pay was the “key issue” for workers, who were told the details of the claim yesterday morning, Mr Camillo said.

“They (Lonsdale negotiations) were tough. The union was tough. And at the end of the day we got a result,” he said.
