Our family needs an SUV as my son has a physical disability, so it is easier for him to get in and out of the front seat without too much difficulty. The budget is limited and we have narrowed it down to two 2.0-litre petrol autos, the Kia Sportage Si and the Hyundai Tucson Active. A bit of haggling can get either for just under $30,000 but having checked the pluses and minuses we can't split them. Kia's warranty is better but servicing costs are higher. Fuel economy is a consideration but not the clincher. Our driving will be 80 per cent metro, 10 per cent freeways and 10 per cent open road. I have heard that the Kia can be a bit busier at highway speeds and not as pleasant to drive on undulating and hilly roads. What's your call?
Both get The Tick from me but I rate the Sportage as best in the compact SUV class today and that means it would be my pick. As for the ride, you are being misled — I find it's a great drive in all conditions thanks to local tuning by suspension guru Graeme Gambold.
