Small car for city living?

My son has a 15-year-old Audi A3 which I am afraid has to be retired. He is doing this reluctantly as it has been a good first car for the last six years. Our mechanic has suggested not buying one of the small cars, such as a Yaris, for safety reasons. He suggested looking at a Japanese car, either Honda or Toyota. He rents a flat where parking is very tight so my concern is that the car would need to be easy to park. He does not drive a great deal and would probably be buying a new car.

There are still baby cars with five-star safety and, given few trips and tight parking, I would recommend a Mazda2.
