I’m wrestling with the benefits of buying diesel vs. petrol for the KL Jeep Cherokee Limited. I’m looking to drive about 23,000 km per year, and hold onto it for about five years. I’m not interested in towing anything, so is fuel economy alone a good reason to get the diesel? I've crunched the numbers on servicing from the Chrysler website, and they are 10,000 km or six months for the diesel for a total for 150,000 km of $9100, compared to 12,000 km or six months for a total of $7425 for the same distance. The fuel cost in Brisbane is 109 cents for diesel and 112 cents for ULP. The diesel engine is about $5000 dearer up front. 90 per cent of my driving is work related/tax deductible, and I get paid 80 cents per kilometre.
Based on the Chrysler claim for fuel consumption the diesel comes out in front by about $600 after taking into consideration the higher upfront cost and higher servicing costs.
