Quick squiz Mazda 3 SP23

Like the Mazda 6, demand for the new Mazda 3 has been very strong, so much so that Mazda has not been able to keep pace with demand.

Top of the Mazda3 range is the SP23 which accounts for 30 per cent of sales – 10 per cent more than anticipated – and the subject of our test. The SP23 is priced from $29,990.

  • The 2.3-litre four-cylinder engine produces 115kW of power at 6500rpm and 203Nm of torque at 4500rpm. It's a slightly detuned version of the power plant from the larger Mazda6.
  • Performance is excellent without being outstanding. The larger engine provides plenty of torque and the car gets moving smartly, belying its chunky dimensions.
  • Despite its obvious size Mazda has done a reasonable job of keeping weight down which tips the scale at 1251kg. Weight is the number one killer of performance in small cars.
  • The five-speed manual transmission on our test car was slick, quick and easy to use, with well spaced ratios that are easy to find.
  • Handling was excellent. The 17 inch wheels and 205/50 tyres provide plenty of grip, although we felt the upper limits of adhesion were a little closer than anticipated.
  • Plenty of bump and thump from the suspension which some drivers might find annoying. The tyres, too, can be noisy.
  • The Mazda3 is a car that looks better on the move than in the car park. Standing still it appears bloated but conveys a more stylish image when passing one, a bit like a larger version of the 6.
  • The orange on blue instrumentation is funky but can be hard to read at times.
  • We didn't get a chance to run the car empty, but fuel economy from the 55-litre tank appears to be excellent, with a claimed figure of 9.0L/100km.
  • Plenty of safety gear with ABS as well as front, side and curtain airbags.
  • Standard equipment includes a full body kit, 17 inch alloys, climate control air, upmarket trim with red or blue color highlights, stainless steel scuff plates and a leather steering wheel and gear knob.
