Mazda RX-8 GT

You've got to hand it to the guys that signed off on this one.

It must have taken guts, because the RX-8 is a car like no other, with its unique rotary engine and quirky back doors that open backwards to provide rear access.

That's not necessarily a good thing, especially in a world where the colour of a car can tip the balance - but sometimes it requires a point of difference.

The RX-8 is a car that you're going to love or hate, maybe a little of both.

With 170kW on tap in manual form, but just 211Nm of torque from a rather high 5500rpm, this is no red light racer.

Mazda claims low sixes for the 0-100km/h dash, but these days that's really not that quick.

Point it at a winding mountain road, however and the car comes to life.

With rear drive, a low centre of gravity, perfect 50/50 balance, torque sensing limited slip diff, lots of grip from the 19-inch wheels and a slick, short throw gear shift - it all adds up to fun with a capital F.

PROS

Love the differentness. It doesn't look like other cars, doesn't drive like other cars and certainly doesn't sound like other cars.

Driving the RX-8 is all about revs. Without revs and plenty of them, it simply does not perform.

With 5000rpm on the clock the thing starts to hum and if you can keep it there the drive experience is a rewarding one.

The GT comes with a six-speed manual, a lift from the MX-5 sports car. It's a sweet, short shifter that falls easily to hand. A six-speed sequential auto is available, but you drop 12kW of power.

Looks better than ever, with a new body kit and classy 19-inch alloys. It's 23kg lighter too.

GT gets the whole shooting match including Recaro seats, Bilstein dampers and a special foam-filled front cross member to make it handle better.

CONS

Here's a car crying out for forced induction, either turbo or supercharging - whatever does the trick. It's the easiest way to give it the low end oomph that is so badly needs.

The lack of torque early in the rev range makes it difficult to keep up with traffic around town. Just as you get going it's time to slow down again for the next set of lights.

Can't understand why Mazda has dropped the triangular rotary references from the front and rear bumpers? For that matter don't know why the centre instrument cluster isn't housed by a triangle instead of a circle.

Bucket style sports seats lack height or lumbar adjustment and the steering wheel is not reach adjustable which makes finding a comfortable driving position difficult.

Slightly larger 65-litre tank. Drinks premium unleaded. Rated at 12.9 litres/100km but has a reputation for being thirsty.

Space saver spare.

WOULD YOU BUY ONE?

Looks more sophisticated than the original, but doesn't feel that much different to drive. You could say it more evolution than revolution. For all its faults, however, the RX-8 remains an exciting car to drive.

  • I have had the 2009 RX8 GT for a few months and think it is just sensational.  If you are looking for raw power and torque you are looking at the wrong car - it’s fast, but not a neck snapper (though dropping down a gear at 7000rpm is pretty exciting).  If you are looking for sublime balance and precision, razor sharp handling, and amazing communicativeness, then nothing under $100k comes close.  Having four seats is a big bonus for me as I sometimes have to ferry kids around.

I have owned many cars over the past 25 years, including an Audi TT, BMW 325, BMW 540, Mercedes C280, Golf GTI and Lexus IS250. The Rx8 is light years ahead of all of these in terms of sheer driving enjoyment, particularly on any road with a few decent bends.  One of the few cars that I really look forward to driving every time.

  • jst bought a 08 mazda rx8 gt fresh of the show room floor…....... what on earth are u negative people talking bout the thing is bloody quick and if u really wanted to have a go at the lights its simply a matter of high revs and dumpin the clutch car is by far a winner in my books put this car on a windy road and it will carve anything in its path or a least almost anything and u will see this car is not as slow as u would think…...i like the fact its a rotor and it high maintanance who cares its a rotory engine less parts more revs nice handling goes great i honestly think if u messed around with induction that u would need a very heavy wallet as i dnt think the rotor seals would be very happy .the engineers desighned this car the way it is sure it could do with a supercharger a turbo or indutction but their i go again the seals people car is fine the way it is well thats wht i think anyway as for petrol side of things and oil i like the way that is

  • I dump my rx8 as the rotor dropped - Mazda blamed it on the fuel, had died a fw times before with the “flooded engine”. How mazda allowed so many problems with is flagship car - crazy. Then tell the owners tough (add your own legal translation). Pain job was poor - repainted under warnty, but later discoloured (again, tough reply). Power does not match looks - disappointing.

  • this car is so bad that a mazda 3 sp 23 will smoke it offlights, its so unpractical because not only does it waste 12.9 litres of petrol thats more then the new nissan GTR which is 12.5,but it also doesnt reward the driver with anything, it only looks good and there is nothin else thats good about the car, the steerin wheel is too thin even golf GTI’s steerin looks better. if mazda plans to make money they really need to drop this rotary slow trolley and shove a mazda 3 MPS engine in this car or somethin else. mazda made a mazda 3 MPS 190 kws and fitted it with front wheel drive, while mazda rx8 which is a lot slower is rear wheel drive, why not use common sense mazda?? and make a this rx8 either a forced induction or at least fit another two rotors to its engines, so renault clio can be seen in the rear mirrors for once

  • I have owned a RX8 GT since Christmas and LOVE it!!
The lack of torque actually makes it an easy car to drive around the city (as long as you don’t want to turn the streets into a drag strip) but get it out onto Tassies windy country roads and it is just sensational. Not Fun with a capital F as the correspondent says but FUN!!!
The 19” Alloys just top it off in the looks department and it certainly turns heads!
    Did I mention it’s fun?

  • Oh Rodney, how could you be that silly? You are obviously not in the ‘tyre’ game, otherwise you would not make such silly statements.
As for that stupid comment about diameters….you display your ignorance with the comment on tyre width and aspect ratios and “...responses are that are too quick…”.
You have read a few items written by self-styled ‘experts’ and then promulgate the information as fact.  Now, go away and do some proper research…......now….go on.

  • To rodney, Firstly, F1 cars run 13 inch wheels with high profile sidewalls, This is nothing to do with handling, it is to do with weight (plus the fact that the brakes fit inside a 13 inch rim due to their superior make up (carbon ceramics and such)). Try stopping an rx8 with about 10” rotors that doesn’t cost more than $100K and you will see part of the reason why big wheels are in. You can’t fit big brakes in little wheels. The other reason they use such big sidewwalls is that they have very little suspension travel so something has to absorb the bumps, I am sure you know this being an expert and all in tyres/suspension or whatever it is you think you are. My wife’s car handles better on 20"s now than it did on 15"s as turn in is a lot sharper, but I could have got the same from only going to an 18 or a 19” wheel/tyre combo. It also grips better with the wider tyres, it no longer lights them up on quick take-offs, but that is given, going from a 205/65 to a 245/35. But then again, maybe it all has to with the pathetic black strips you call roads over in NSW.

  • If anyone has driven any RX8 before. And will not this one is actually slower and heavier than the 1st generation. Juwst looks nicer.

I flogged an RX8 at 3 different sets of lights in my sisters new 2.0 litre manual lancer VR no Bull….....these cars are very slow without forced induction…....there are many more cars you can buy for the money…....

  • Rodney Scott-Young - Forster NSW - “16,17,18 or 20 inch wheels have nothing to do with grip” - incorrect, they do. Lower profile tires have much greater lateral stability (the tires, thus the car will roll less under hard cornering) which also makes the car more responsive in corners. Another advantage is the rims are bigger, meaning larger brakes can be used.

  • 16,17,18 or 20 inch wheels have nothing to do with grip, and shows an ignorance by the writer. What is of importance is the width,ie 235 or 265 etc with the aspect ratio and diameter detirmine the footprint and so the grip potential. Low aspect ratios often give responces that are too quick for real road conditions. Formula 1 run diameters around 14 inches,so are we really heading in the right direction with 19 plus wheels, regards Rod.
