We turn the spotlight on the car world's newest and brightest stars.

We turn the spotlight on the car world's newest and brightest stars as we ask the questions to which you want the answers. But there's only one question that really needs answering would you buy one?

What is it?

A special edition created especially for Australia, we're told. Brings the number of VW Tiguan models to four. Price-wise sits between the entry level 118TSI and the 103TDI diesel (but you can't get a 118 auto).

How much?

Billed as the value for money option, it comes with a price tag of $33,490. The auto adds $2500 to the price.

What are competitors?

Any of the above. ix35, Dualis, ASX  to name a few. Don't overlook Skoda's either. It's a Volkswagen under the skin and is attractively priced.

What's under the bonnet?

2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine delivers 132kW of power and 280Nm of torque from 1700 revs. Looks like a detuned version of the 155kW TSI engine. Engine is hooked up to a  six-speed manual or six-speed automatic (note not the DSG double clutch box).

How does it go?

Our test car was the manual. A bit clumsy off the line but has plenty of mid range punch thanks to the turbo. Does the dash in 8.3 seconds (auto is much slower at 9.6 which explains why they gave us the manual) Is it economical? Fuel economy is rated at 8.7 litres/100km for the manual and 8.9 for the automatic and it takes premium unleaded. We were getting 11.7 litres/100km.

Is it green?

Gets 3.5 out 5 from the Government's Green Vehicle Guide (Prius scores 5). Produces 204g/km of CO2.

Is it safe?

Scores a full five stars for safety. Has six airbags, traction control, electronic stability control with rollover protection and is all wheel drive. Also comes with a reversing camera as standard.

Is it comfortable?

The cloth upholstery is fine by us. Driver's seat gets lumbar adjustment. Like the trim better than the original model.

What's it like to drive?

Easy to drive. Maybe a little unexciting but that is probably a good thing. Easy to get in and out of, with plenty of vision courtesy of the higher driving position.

Manual is smooth and easy to use, but could be tiresome in traffic.

Is it value for money?

Comes with auto dimming rear view mirror, dual zone climate control, automatic wipers and headlights, with coming-and-leaving home function, front fog lights and Volkswagens innovative Park Assist 2. There's also Bluetooth and a media device interface complete with cable for your iPod.

Would we buy one?

Yes. Without question. But we worry about the cost of servicing which can be expensive.
