Skoda Fabia Wagon 2015 review

Australia's love affair with urban SUVs isn't the only reason the Fabia wagon is seldom seen on our roads. Skoda's little load-carrier isn't a pretty sight and its dumpy dorkiness makes it practically sales-proof.

But this will change come July, when the wagon version will go on sale here at the same time as the five-door hatch. Featuring a less absurd width-to-height ratio, the new Fabia wagon is much easier on the eye.

This mini wagon is also super practical. Its tail is 265mm longer than the Fabia hatch, which increases its cargo capacity to a whopping 530L. That's more space than the boot of a Commodore sedan.

The plain interior appears well made. Rear kneeroom is tight for tall adults but there's generous headroom.

The Fabia will be the first model from VW Group with Mirrorlink technology, which integrates some smartphone apps into the central screen.

Fabia hatches and wagons share engines and transmissions. The cheapest option will be a 66kW version of VW's refined little 1.2-litre turbo four with a five-speed manual — the output is less than the current Fabia.

But the wagon gets a more powerful 81kW version of the 1.2-litre. Most buyers are tipped to go for the seven-speed double-clutch auto.

Closely related to the recently facelifted Polo, the new Fabia family shares many of the VW's characteristics.

Verdict

The Skoda is a quiet, well-engineered little car that's built for comfort, fuel efficiency and practicality rather than speed.
