Nissan Navara EnGuard concept revealed

Meet the Navara EnGuard concept - Nissan's bad-ass emergency rescue vehicle that comes equipped with its own Phantom drone.

Unveiled at the 2016 Hannover Motor Show, the Navara EnGuard concept has been designed to act as a self-contained rescue station that can tackle the toughest terrain.

Its flatbed - split into two levels courtesy of new fibreglass trays - is home to a heap of life-saving equipment. The top tray is home to two-way radios, rope and an axe, while the bottom tray houses an oxygen tank, resuscitation kit and life jackets.

A new 360-degree LED lighting set-up has been built into the Navara's redesigned roofline, complete with blue strobe lights in each corner, with more integrated into the wheel arches, foglights and rear lights. And if the lights aren't enough, the fluorescent green paint used on the wheels and side-steps was chosen because Nissan's research showed it was the most visible option, even to those effected by colour blindness.

But the coolest bonus item is undoubtedly the on-board DJI Phantom 4 drone, which can climb to 6km and transmit its aerial view to a pop-up screen in the side of the load tray.

The EnGuard Concept also debuts some nifty EV technology from Nissan, namely two portable 2kW battery packs that are charged via the Navara's 2.3-litre twin-turbo diesel engine. Each pack contains seven Nissan EV battery modules, stored inside all-weather aluminium cases that have been designed to be easy to carry.

The idea is that emergency crews can carry the packs to a rescue site and use them operate their equipment without the need for a petrol generator - meaning they can be used in enclosed spaces, too. Nissan calls it its Intelligent Mobility Vision, a program used to explore how automotive EV tech can be used in other sectors.

"The Nissan Navara is a tough and smart pick-up which our customers rely on to go anywhere and do anything in their daily lives. The Nissan Navara EnGuard Concept is an extension of that principle, showcasing how our award-winning pick-up is perfectly suited to tackle the toughest terrain and save lives," says Nissan's Light Commercial Vehicles vice president, Philippe Guerin-Boutaud.

"The Navara EnGuard Concept opens a new chapter in the Nissan Intelligent Mobility vision, featuring our commitment to zero fatalities and zero emissions. Our prototype EV portable battery pack reveals how Nissan will integrate its world-renowned EV battery technology and expertise into new sectors in the future."

Andrew Chesterton should probably hate cars. From his hail-damaged Camira that looked like it had spent a hard life parked at the end of Tiger Woods' personal driving range, to the Nissan Pulsar Reebok that shook like it was possessed by a particularly mean-spirited demon every time he dared push past 40km/h, his personal car history isn't exactly littered with gold. But that seemingly endless procession of rust-savaged hate machines taught him something even more important; that cars are more than a collection of nuts, bolts and petrol. They're your ticket to freedom, a way to unlock incredible experiences, rolling invitations to incredible adventures. They have soul. And so, somehow, the car bug still bit. And it bit hard. When "Chesto" started his journalism career with News Ltd's Sunday and Daily Telegraph newspapers, he covered just about everything, from business to real estate, courts to crime, before settling into state political reporting at NSW Parliament House. But the automotive world's siren song soon sounded again, and he begged anyone who would listen for the opportunity to write about cars. Eventually they listened, and his career since has seen him filing car news, reviews and features for TopGear, Wheels, Motor and, of course, CarsGuide, as well as many, many others. More than a decade later, and the car bug is yet to relinquish its toothy grip. And if you ask Chesto, he thinks it never will.
