Incoming! New 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan and Passat will debut this year, but will Australia see these next-generation cars?

At least two new Volkswagen models will debut before the end of this year, including a new version of one of the brand’s biggest sellers in Australia - the Tiguan mid-size SUV.

Now confirmed to be set for a 2023 reveal, the 2024 Volkswagen Tiguan and the VW Passat were both mentioned in a Volkswagen media announcement regarding the Golf-sized VW ID.2all.

While the models were only given a small mention, we can now expect to see the next-gen version of VW Australia’s most popular model soon. The Tiguan and its Allspace version are by far the brand’s most popular cars here, making 1682 of the brand’s 5472 sales in January and February this year combined.

While we certainly expect Volkswagen Australia to bring the next Tiguan to Australia as soon as possible, some time in 2024, exactly which variants and drivetrains it will arrive in are yet to be determined.

Electrification is now on the cards for the brand in Australia after having held off for some time citing government inaction, and the next Tiguan will almost certainly move to the same version of the MQB platform as the Golf Mk8 and Cupra Formentor, allowing for plug-in hybrid electrification.

Given Australia’s slow uptake of electric cars, and even slower uptake of plug-in hybrids, expect to see petrol-powered versions of the Tiguan remain a focus.

In terms of design, we were also given a hint as to what to expect from VW’s future models last week.

Don't expect the next Tiguan to look wildly different from the current generation.

Of the aforementioned ID.2all, Andreas Mindt, Head of Design at Volkswagen Passenger Cars, said it was a precursor in terms of design to the direction of all the brand’s models for the future. Whether the Tiguan adopts something closer to this, or follows more in the footsteps of current models like the Mk8 Golf, as seen in the render above from Russian outlet Kolesa, is yet to be seen.

When it comes to the Volkswagen Passat, however, the last word from VW on the matter was that the next-generation model would be under consideration, given the declining popularity of the mid-size car segment.

The brand also has the Arteon to consider when planning its model line-up, though neither model is a sales runaway, with each having sold only in the triple figures in 2022 - 612 for Arteon and 917 for Passat (including Alltrack).
