Feeling uncool? Take a car tablet

Some in-car screens have taken on the appearance of a mobile tablet computer, even though they are a part of the dash. But now Audi has made central control screen that’s as portable as it appears. At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week Audi unveiled a touchscreen tablet computer that slots into the car and can be taken with you once you’ve arrived at your destination.

It’s similar to plugging in a phone, except that the map screen is larger and the apps are tailored to the car. It is yet another example of the invasion of mobile devices in cars, and puts the writing on the wall for portable navigation units. The Audi system currently runs Android and Google technology, although Apple is working on similar technology with other car makers.

Audi would not say how far away the system is from appearing in a production car that can be bought at showrooms, but most of the technology on display was an insight into what’s around the corner in two to three years’ time.
