Mazda just keeps teasing us with talk of a rotary revival, with fresh reports out of Japan suggesting the brand could revive the technology in the shape of a hardcore hydrogen performance car that would essentially reestablish the famed “RX” badge.
The news isn’t entirely out of left-field, with the brand’s RX Vision concept heralding a return to performance-car form for the carmaker once famed for spitting out cars like the RX-7, RX-8 and even the Mazda3 MPS.
Now, a note on the rotary engine. We are expecting the technology to return to the Mazda portfolio, this time at use in the MX-30 in much the same way Nissan e-Power tech works - the engine solely used to recharge the battery, and the battery used to drive the wheels.
But news out of Japan today suggest the use of the tech might not end there, with Best Car Web reporting the brand is investigating the combination of hydrogen fuel cell technology and rotary engines.
“Although it is a small scale, development has progressed. As the world has suddenly turned to decarbonisation, the view that hydrogen rotary is an important technology is rapidly expanding," one Mazda spokesperson told the publication.
Could this be the start of a hydrogen-rotary powered RX Vision? Let’s hope so.
