MG is powering up its family SUV.
The Chinese brand has confirmed prices for its new HS Hybrid+ range, which joins the petrol and plug-in hybrid versions in the local line-up. It competes with petrol-electric versions of the Toyota RAV4, Kia Sportage and Haval H6.
The two-tier range kicks off at $42,990 drive-away for the Excite grade, and $46,990 for the Essence variant.
That undercuts the top-selling RAV4 Hybrid by several thousands, but it is about $2000 more than the cheapest GWM Haval H6 hybrid.
Power comes from a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine and an electric motor that combine for 165kW and 340Nm, matched to an automatic transmission that drives the front wheels.
MG claims it drinks 5.2 litres per 100km, which falls behind the RAV4 (4.7L/100km), but crucially equals the H6's 5.2L/100km claim.
It comes with desirable items such as dual 12.3-inch displays, one for the multimedia and the other for the driver’s instruments. There is Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the higher-spec version gets a wireless device charger and an eight-speaker stereo instead of a six-speaker in the cheaper version.
The Excite has cloth wrapped seats that are power adjustable in the front row, and the Essence ups this with synthetic leather seats that are heated up front and with increased adjustment with a memory function for the driver.
It is packed with active driver aids such as auto emergency braking, blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert.
There are 19-inch alloy wheels and temporary spare tyre.
MG Australia's boss, Peter Ciao, said the company was bringing cars Australians wanted.
“We’ve worked even harder with SAIC Group to have vehicles engineered specifically for demanding Australian conditions. Ensuring our designers and engineers understand the unique needs of Australian drivers, we’ve helped them to create reliable, high-quality solutions like our Hybrid+ and Super Hybrid," said Ciao.
