Mazda has announced a bigger 2.2-litre engine as part of its 2026 BT-50 range with pricing starting at $37,900.

The revamped four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine produces 120kW, which is 10kW more than the outgoing 1.9-litre variant, while torque has increased 50Nm to 400Nm.

A new eight-speed auto drives either RWD or 4WD options.

The new variant is available at the entry-level XS grade in a single or dual cab body.

The bigger engine has resulted in lower fuel consumption than the 1.9-litre, dropping from as much as 0.7L/100km to 6.3L/100km, according to Mazda.

The Mazda BT-50 will be on sale from October.
