Best Hatchback by Price, Size & Category in Aus

Hatchbacks are a popular choice because of their clever use of interior space. Available with either three or five doors, they tend to be shorter than traditional sedans, but still offer useful room for storage and passengers. You can buy a hatch in all sizes, from tiny city cars to small and mid-size hatches, right up to large luxury models.

Mazda 3 2024 review: Evolve SP G25 hatch
8.5/10
Half a decade on, the current-generation Mazda 3 has weathered a world of change.Cheap cars have vanished. Electric vehicles are commonplace and the small car class it belongs to has been decimated by SUVs. Big names like the Ford Focus, Holden Astra and Mitsubishi Lancer are history. But while it looks identical to the car unveiled at the 2018 LA Auto Show, today’s Mazda 3 has also evolved, albeit gently.Let’s see how competitive the latest and improved (as well as more expensive) version is.
MG MG4 XPower 2024 review
6.9/10
MG has been one of the fastest growing brands in the Australian market in the past five years, carving a spot for itself amongst the best-selling names. But now it’s about to take on arguably its toughest challenge yet - selling a performance car.MG’s success until now has been built largely on value, with its affordable MG3 and ZS SUV leading the way. The arrival of the all-new, all-electric MG4 XPower means the brand will try its luck at selling cars based on performance, dynamics and an emotional connection. It’s not the first electric hot hatch in Australia, that distinction arguably belongs to the Cupra Born. But, MG has achieved much higher sales locally than Cupra, making it the first electric hot hatch from a mainstream brand, and that’s why it has the potential to be a game changer for the market. If the XPower succeeds it will likely reshape the hot hatch market, which until now has been dominated by long-time players and big-name brands, including the Honda Civic Type R, Hyundai i30 N, Toyota GR Corolla and Volkswagen Golf R.
BYD Dolphin 2024 review
7.8/10
It’s about time for a change. Since the beginning of the EV era, Tesla has been the dominant name, and not without good reason.Tesla made electric cars popular, cool, and above all, accessible. To this day, the Model 3 and Model Y remain excellent purchases in their respective categories. And yet, the tide seems to be turning. Many buyers haven't been thrilled by Elon Musk's antics, how popular the Tesla brand has become or maybe they never liked the look and feel of Tesla to begin with. For those prospective EV buyers, it looks like BYD is set to be the next big thing in electric cars.Offered at a far more accessible price-point, the Chinese brand still stands out with its distinctively styled vehicles and innovative features. And the new car we’re looking at for this review, the Dolphin hatchback, could be the one to elevate the brand to the levels of popularity and recognition Tesla currently enjoys. At the time of writing, it was also the most affordable electric car you can buy in Australia. But is it more than that? Read on to find out.
