Uptake of electric vehicles stepped up again in 2025.
There were more than 100,000 new electric cars sales in Australia in 2025, representing a near 10 per cent increase compared to 2024.
The Tesla Model Y mid-size SUV led the way, cracking the top 10 across all vehicles in 2025 with 22,239 sales.
BYD was next in line, with its Sealion 7 mid-size SUV that managed 13,410 registrations in its first year on sale and was the only other EV to hit five digits.
Tesla rounded out the top-three podium as the Model 3 sedan came in making 6617 sales last year.
The rest of the pack all managed less than 5000 sales, but some new players have started to emerge.
Next up was the Kia EV5 on 4787 sales, followed by the Geely EX5 (3944).
BYD’s strong presence on the list continues with its Atto 3 compact SUV (3861), Seal sedan (3784) and Dolphin hatchback (3248) next up, highlighting its place as the eighth best-selling brand in Australia.
MG makes its only appearance in the top 10 with the MG4 on 2986 sales for the last 12 months, while Kia’s EV3 finishes off the top 10 on 2597 sales.
Honourable mentions include the Polestar 4 (1295 sales) and the Zeekr 7X, which only went on sale in October 2025, made 1206.
There are more than 20 new EVs coming to Australia in 2026, so we can expect numbers to continue increasing.
