MG Australia has locked in the pricing for its new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) HS Super Hybrid line-up ahead of deliveries starting in September.

Pricing for the two variant line-up starts at $52,990 drive-away for the HS Super Hybrid Excite, and extends to $55,990 drive-away for the HS Super Hybrid Essence.

Compared to the equivalent petrol-powered variants, the HS Super Hybrid Excite is $15,000 more expensive and the HS Super Hybrid Essence is $16,000 more expensive.

Even compared to rivals like the BYD Sealion 6 (starts at $42,990 before on-roads) and Jaecoo J7 SHS ($47,990 drive-away), the HS Super Hybrid is more expensive.

The pricing is more in line with the GWM Haval H6 GT PHEV ($53,990 drive-away) and Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (starts at $57,290 before on-roads).

MG claims this new Super Hybrid powertrain has been ā€œtuned specifically for Australian driving habitsā€ and has been ā€œextensively tested and tunedā€ to ensure this.

It combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with a 154kW electric motor and a 24.7kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery for total system outputs of 220kW and 350Nm.

Compared to the previous-generation MG HS +EV, the petrol engine doesn’t produce as much power, but the electric motor is more powerful, and the battery pack is considerably larger. Overall, the powertrain produces more power but less torque.

MG claims the HS Super Hybrid can travel up to 135km on electric power alone, according to NEDC testing, and with a full battery charge and tank of petrol (55L) is able to travel a total distance of 1000km.

For context, the previous-generation HS +EV was claimed to be able to travel 63km on electric power alone, so this new HS Super Hybrid more than doubles this.

The way the MG Super Hybrid system works is at low speeds the electric motor powers the wheels, but at highway speeds the petrol engine provides additional assistance, much like the BYD Sealion 6.

When the battery pack is in a low state of charge, the system retains enough charge to ensure it still operates as a hybrid at low speeds.

According to internal testing by MG Australia, it claims the HS Super Hybrid is capable of achieving less than 5.0L/100km in real-world driving conditions.

Like the rest of the MG range, the HS Super Hybrid is covered by a 10-year, 250,000km warranty.

Full specifications for the MG HS Super Hybrid range will be detailed closer to its launch in September.
