There’s a new number-one seller in town.

The Ford Ranger has run down the Toyota RAV4 at the halfway point of the yearly sales race.

Ford’s Ranger topped the charts in June with 6293 sales, just pipping the Toyota HiLux (6195), and streets ahead of the previously top selling RAV4 (2421).

The end of financial year ute boom continued with the Isuzu D-Max coming in fourth with 3119 sales, followed by the plug-in hybrid BYD Shark 6 workhorse (2993).

Tesla returned to form with its new Model Y ‘Juniper’ notching up 3457 sales, which is good enough for the final spot on June’s new car sales podium.

The American electric car brand registered 4589 sales for the month, which was slightly down on June 2024, but a vast improvement on its sales at the start of this year and good enough for the 10th best selling brand in June.

SUVs dominated the second half of the top 10 list, with family favourites the Ford Everest (2705), Mazda CX-5 (2582), Hyundai Kona (2484), Toyota RAV4 (2421) and Hyundai Tucson (2332) rounding out the leaderboard.

BYD was one of the biggest winners in June with the Chinese carmaker selling more than 8000 vehicles in the month, its most on record, and more than big names such as Kia and Mitsubishi.

The previously mentioned Shark 6 ute, along with the Sealion 7 electric SUV and Sealion 6 plug-in hybrid SUV were all smash hits.

GWM continued its march up the leaderboard, with 5464 sales putting it in seventh position and marking it as a permanent feature in the top 10 sellers list.

Relative newcomer Chery also had a super month with the Chinese brand moving more than 3000 vehicles. This is a 180 per cent jump on the same month in 2024 and put its sales for the year up more than 228 per cent.

Hyundai is firing on all cylinders, with the strong performances from its SUV and small car range resulting in one of its best months in some time. Its sister brand Kia still leads it for the year, but the gap has closed.

Despite Tesla’s strong rebound, sales of electric cars are still down about six per cent for the year and about 10 per cent for the month.

Plug-in hybrids and conventional hybrids is where the money is going. PHEV sales were up more than 217 per cent in June and hybrids were flat but accounted for more than 15,000 sales.

Overall the market had a strong June with 127,437 sales, marking a 2.2 per cent jump compared to June 2024.
