The MG U9 Explore Pro is the hero model in the Chinese brand’s new ute line-up. Boasting a generous list of creature comforts and some clever features not available on the other variants, the Explore Pro is clearly targeting the premium ute buyer.

The Explore Pro is priced from $60,990, drive-away, and has 20-inch alloy wheels, an eight-speaker JBL sound system, a panoramic sunroof, suede headlining, heated front and outboard rear seats, voice command, a wireless smartphone charging pad, satellite navigation, vehicle app connectivity and Amazon Music.

The unique element of the Explore Pro is its clever tailgate step, which allows you to fold down the power tailgate and then pull out a step into the tray. There’s also the 'Smart Hatch', that lowers the rear glass and body into the cabin to create a longer load area. But that is an expensive option.

It does, however, feature the same 160kW/520Nm 2.5-litre, four-cylinder, turbo-diesel engine, eight-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive system as the rest of the range. Fuel consumption is a claimed 7.9L/100km on the combined (urban/extra-urban) cycle.

For non-commercial users, such as fleets, the U9 Explore Pro is covered by MG’s seven-year/unlimited kilometre warranty, but must be maintained via the brand’s direct service centres.

Steve has been obsessed with all things automotive for as long as he can remember. Literally, his earliest memory is of a car. Having amassed an enviable Hot Wheels and Matchbox collection as a kid he moved into the world of real cars with an Alfa Romeo Alfasud. Despite that questionable history he carved a successful career for himself, firstly covering motorsport for Auto Action magazine before eventually moving into the automotive publishing world with CarsGuide in 2008. Since then he's worked for every major outlet, having work published in The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, Drive.com.au, Street Machine, V8X and F1 Racing. These days he still loves cars as much as he did as a kid and has an Alfa Romeo Alfasud in the garage (but not the same one as before... that's a long story).
