Hyundai has a new family hero.

The South Korean brand has announced the price and features of its new Palisade extra large SUV.

The hulking family hauler now comes with hybrid power and is currently only available in fully loaded Calligraphy trim.

The Palisade’s hybrid set-up uses a 2.5-litre turbo-petrol engine with two electric motors — one to drive the wheels and the other used solely for regenerative braking — to deliver enhanced performance and improved fuel economy.

This hybrid set-up delivers a power boost of 28kW and 105Nm over the outgoing six-cylinder petrol version and 98kW and 20Nm compared to the old 2.2-litre turbo-diesel motor.

It also uses 3.9L/100km and 0.5L/100km less than the old petrol and diesel units respectively.

It comes standard with eight seats but buyers can option a seven-seat layout for a roomier second row that has just two individual seats.

The new Palisade is bigger in every direction compared to the outgoing one, with a similar footprint to a Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series.

Hyundai Australia has applied its own suspension tune to the Palisade so it can better suit local conditions and road surfaces and the hybrid tech enables a vehicle to load function. The latter allows owners to power or charge appliances via the vehicle’s battery.
