GMC began in 1911 as the truck division of General Motors in the US. It focused on rugged commercial vehicles and light trucks, carving a niche alongside Chevrolet. Over time, GMC positioned itself as the more premium option, with upscale finishes and added features.
Through the 20th century, GMC built fire trucks, ambulances and military vehicles before shifting focus to pickup trucks and SUVs. It gained a loyal following in North America with models like the Sierra ute and Yukon SUV. GMC’s Denali trim line, launched in 1999, pushed it further upmarket.
Now officially available in Australia, GMC remains a key player in North America with a strong identity built around size, capability and comfort.
