United States truck manufacturer Ram has confirmed it will build an SUV based on its popular full-sized pick-up and will start selling it in 2028.

According to US motoring industry publication Automotive News, word of Ram's upcoming (and first) SUV comes straight from the top with the CEO of Ram's parent company Stellantis, Antonio Filosa, briefing Wall Street analysts last week.

In the earnings call Filosa said Ram’s new SUV would go into production in 2028 and offer a “much more comprehensive product range” for customers.

The new SUV will be built at Ram’s Michigan plant with Automotive News suggesting it will be offered in two variants - petrol and a petrol-electric hybrid.

Filosa also announced a mid-sized pick-up would also be built in the US with customers able to buy it from 2028.

The news follows Stellantis’ announcement in October that over the next four years it would invest close to A$20B in US manufacturing, adding that the vehicles would see the creation of 900 new jobs.

Is the Ram SUV coming to Australia, too? CarsGuide has already reached out to Ram Trucks Australia.

If it does make it here it wouldn’t be until after 2028 and of course the SUV would have to undergo the same remanufacturing process to convert the vehicle from left-hand drive to right as is done with Ram pick-ups sold locally.

The price of a big Ram SUV wouldn’t be tiny either. The Ram 1500 starts at a list price of $119,950.

Still, the popularity of a Ram SUV in Australia appears to be almost guaranteed with the full-sized pick up being a popular choice for those looking for a larger ute than a Ford Ranger or Toyota HiLux.

In 2024 Ram’s sales reached 3852 in Australia with the 1500 being the most-bought model. Last year’s sales dipped, however, after recording almost double the amount the year before.

Year-to-date sales (to the end of September) for Ram in Australia reached 2523, down from 2909 compared to the same period in 2024.

Ram’s biggest rivals in Australia are Ford with its F-150 and Chevrolet and its Silverado. An SUV version of the Ram 1500 would compete against the GMC Yukon in Australia.

The eight-seater Yukon which is sold through General Motors Speciality Vehicles in Australia lists for $174,990.

Whether a Ram SUV will come in under that price or even come to Australia at all still unknown.

The best part of this was being given money to buy stickers. She loved stickers… which then turned into a love of tattoos. Out of boredom, she learnt to drive at 14 on her parents’ bush property in what can only be described as a heavily modified Toyota LandCruiser.   At the age of 17 she was told she couldn’t have a V8 Holden ute by her mother, which led to Laura and her father laying in the driveway for three months building a six-cylinder ute with more horsepower than a V8.   Since then she’s only ever owned V8s, with a Ford Falcon XW and a Holden Monaro CV8 part of her collection over the years.  Laura has authored two books and worked as a journalist writing about science, cars, music, TV, cars, art, food, cars, finance, architecture, theatre, cars, film and cars.
