The Sahara remains the fourth-tier trim level in the new LandCruiser LC300 range, but it is now $6,917 more expensive at $131,190 (MSRP). You could choose the VX for $17,200 less, and moving up to the GR Sport will cost you an extra $6,600, or the philosophically closer Sahara ZX for an extra $7,600.

Look for the chrome mirrors to pick a Sahara over a VX, and it feels a bit odd that you’ve got to spend more than $130,000 to get leather seat trim with the Sahara, and that’s also the case for a head-up display and a power tailgate. This leather can be had in black or beige, though.

Other luxury details include second row entertainment screens and 14-speaker JBL audio, electric folding for the third row seats, a cool box in the centre console, heated steering wheel and the second row also scores heated and ventilated seats.

Like all LC300 trim levels, the Sahara is fitted with the new 227kW/700Nm 3.3-litre twin-turbo V6 diesel, with an official fuel consumption figure of 8.9L/100km.

Back when all cars burned fuel and couldn't drive themselves, Mal was curing boredom by scanning every car his parents' VB Commodore drove past. His childhood appreciation for the car world exploded during a three-year stint in the US, and serious questions were asked when he spent a good chunk of his uni career perfecting lap times at Wakefield Park. Mal got his big break scooping the VE II Commodore, before a stint at Overlander magazine and kicking off his online career with The Motor Report in its heyday. These days he's exactly the same height as Michael Schumacher and uses his powers for good at the helm of CarsGuide's editorial team. Mal proudly shuns brand allegiance and counts three young kids, an EH Holden, NA MX-5, KE20 Corolla, W116 Mercedes-Benz and the world's most versatile Toyota Echo among his personal stable. He also craves a Subaru Vortex, so get in touch if you know where to find one.
