ANCAP gives five stars to new Qashqai and C-Class

Nissan Qashqai and Mercedes-Benz C-Class get top safety rating, but four star Ssangyong Stavic people mover disappoints.

Nissan's new Qashqai small SUV  has been awarded a top five star safety rating by the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP).

While the Qashqai’s crash performance was enough to earn five stars, the Dualis replacement was however criticised for the omission of Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) from its Australian spec sheet.

AEB is available on European-spec Qashqais and several other models on the Australian market, and can prevent collisions by detecting stationary objects and applying braking force before the driver reacts.

“AEB is a proven life-saver and all manufacturers should be doing their utmost to bring this technology to the market today.  The lack of AEB cannot be a matter of cost as it is available on other inexpensive cars," ANCAP Chairman Lauchlan McIntosh said.

This round of ANCAP testing also saw the upcoming 2014 Mercedes-Benz C-Class scored a five star rating, which will come standard with AEB and a pedestrian-friendly active bonnet across all variants.

Less impressive however was the updated Ssangyong Stavic people mover, which was given a mediocre a four star safety rating due to its poor performance in the frontal offset crash test and lack of head-protecting side curtain airbags.
