2022 Hyundai Tucson XRT toughens up to bring rugged fight to new Toyota RAV4 Edge, Mazda CX-5 Touring and Subaru Forester Wilderness

The XRT is a meaner version of the new-generation Tucson.

Hyundai has revealed the Tucson mid-size SUV’s latest grade, with the new XRT looking to appeal to adventurers.

Much like the Santa Fe XRT large SUV before it, the Tucson XRT takes the mid-size SUV to the next level, introducing exclusive front and rear bumper inserts that feature what Hyundai calls “rugged detailing”.

Bespoke side cladding is also fitted to the Tucson XRT, with it punctuated by a series of cut-outs. And then there’s black 19-inch alloy wheels (with a specific design) and the obligatory black side-mirror caps.

To round out the exterior package, side steps are also in tow alongside black window trim and roof cross bars, while the Tucson XRT’s interior features black cloth upholstery and a black headliner.

As such, the Tucson XRT finds itself going tyre to tyre with the similarly themed Toyota RAV4 Edge, Mazda CX-5 Touring and Subaru Forester Wilderness.

As with the Santa Fe XRT, the US-focused Tucson XRT isn’t expected to be sold in Australia, with Hyundai telling CarsGuide it has "no current plans" locally.

That said, Hyundai Australia might decide to introduce its own new Tucson grade with some of the XRT elements, perhaps as a special edition. Stay tuned.

Justin’s dad chose to miss his birth because he wanted to watch Peter Brock hopefully win Bathurst, so it figures Justin grew up to have a car obsession, too – and don’t worry, his dad did turn up in time after some stern words from his mum. That said, despite loving cars and writing, Justin chose to pursue career paths that didn’t lend themselves to automotive journalism, before eventually ending up working as a computer technician. But that car itch just couldn’t be scratched by his chipped Volkswagen Golf R (Mk7), so he finally decided to give into the inevitable and study a Master of Journalism at the same time. And even with the long odds, Justin was lucky enough to land a full-time job as a motoring journalist soon after graduating and the rest, as they say, is history. These days, Justin happily finds himself working at CarsGuide during the biggest period of change yet for the automotive industry, which is perhaps the most exciting part of all. In case you’re wondering, Justin begrudgingly sold the Golf R (sans chip) and still has plans to buy his dream car, an E46 BMW M3 coupe (manual, of course), but he is in desperate need of a second car space – or maybe a third.
