Volkswagen revealed the facelifted Touareg in May 2023 and the Australian arm swiftly confirmed the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) R performance model would headline the local range for the first time.

It arrives here as Volkswagen Australia's first PHEV and the brand's most powerful model ever for $129,990, before on-road costs – $20,000 more than the 210TDI R-Line.

With a 14.3kWh battery, we achieved 46km of electric-only range – a good amount for commuting in one of Australia's capital cities. Next-gen PHEV tech is going to increase range but this is a good start.

The standard air suspension's 'Comfort' mode makes the Touareg R an incredibly plush proposition around town with a relaxed ride despite massive 22-inch 'Estoril' alloy wheels.

In the countryside, its 340kW and 700Nm outputs are suitably punchy for an R performance model – Volkswagen claims a believable 5.1 seconds to 100km/h. Though you can feel the R's 2423kg weight, the air springs and adaptive dampers make this a remarkably dynamic vehicle on twisty roads.

The Touareg R's interior feels decidedly similar to the base cars. There are flourishes of blue stitching, brushed aluminium trim and black 'Puglia' leather-appointed seats with R embossing as well as massage and ventilation yet it's a subdued affair.

The Touareg is very practical with space for one big and two small bottles in the door cards, two cupholders in the front seats and spacious second row with space for three adults across. A standard sunroof give a sense of airiness while tinted glass, integrated sun blinds and quad-zone climate control means passengers don't overheat.

A large boot (810L) grows to 1800L when you fold the 40/20/40 split rear seat. Shopping bag hooks, pull tabs to fold the second row, rubber mat and luggage net make it a clever boot. Unfortunately no Touareg is fitted with a space saver or full-size spare tyre.

Diligence and regular charging is required to make the most of the plug-in hybrid system so it won't suit every buyer. If you're strictly country-based the 210TDI Elegance or R-Line are more sensible choices. Metropolitan dwellers with a tarmac-focused adventurous side will get the most out of the R's unique powertrain and abilities.
