Jeep is trying to appeal to a younger audience, as well as more female buyers, with its Avenger electric car, despite the familiar design cues.
Speaking to media, Jeep Head of Design Enlarged Europe, Daniele Calonaci said the intention with Avenger is to bring down the average age of the brand’s customers.
“As you can imagine, the average customer until some years ago for Jeep were males of 50 years [of age],” he said.
“The deal was to put down the average [age] of the customer for Jeep and to have more young customers, also more female customers.
“The Renegade for example, reached 20 per cent of female customers, but we are pushing to have 40 per cent on the Avenger.
“And we are already at that level in Europe, so I think the idea we had in our mind from the very beginning, is already a reality in Europe.”
When probed as to what design decisions were made to make the Avenger more appealing to its targeted audience, Calonaci said there was no one element of the Avenger that would make it more attractive to one gender over another, but its size and positioning would be key.
As a small, city-sized, all-electric SUV, the Avenger competes against models like the MG ZS, Hyundai Kona, Kia Niro and Peugeot 2008 – the latter sharing the same platform.
The Jeep Avenger offers a WLTP-certified driving range of 400km from a 54kWh battery, while its single electric motor produces 115kW/260Nm and drives the front wheels. It is expected to arrive in Australia late in 2024 with a price tag around $60,000.
Already available in Europe, Jeep has stated the Avenger is seeing a high level of conquest sales as customers are attracted to its boxy design and youthful image.
Some quirky design elements include a drum-beat indicator sound and an iPad-like centre console folding soft cover, as well as head-turning exterior colours like Lake (green), Ruby (red) and the signature Sun (yellow).
Despite this, Calonaci said the Avenger will still appeal to Jeep’s core philosophy of being an adventurous model for those with an active lifestyle.
“Refreshing the basket of customers for Jeep, it’s really interesting for us, but always with an active approach to life is always important for us,” he said.
To this end, the Avenger is equipped with six different driving modes, including Sand, Mud and Snow, despite being a front-drive-only model.
Jeep is expected to bring to market a production version of the Avenger 4x4 Concept revealed at last year’s Paris Motor Show for buyers who need all-wheel-drive traction, though details are yet to surface.
