Volkswagen has finally announced pricing for the 2024 Touareg large five-seat SUV.

A neat surprise for those looking to buy, the diesel-heavy facelifted Touareg with more kit and technology is significantly more affordable than the outgoing car. The prices are down between $7550 and effectively $10,970, with the biggest savings on the 170TDI entry grade.

“We worked really hard over several months to get this pricing. We think it landed in a really good spot and we hope it appeals to families with kids”, said Product Manager of Passenger Vehicles for Volkswagen Australia, Glenn Reid.

While the Touareg’s Audi Q7 underpinnings mean VW is targeting BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE buyers, its price is more in line with rivals such as the Volvo XC90 and Mazda CX-90.

And, with the new 170TDI’s price, there’s an opportunity to appeal to Ford Everest Platinum buyers that appreciate the Touareg’s greater on-road focus.

VW said repeated discussions with head office regarding upping Touareg volume and looming New Vehicle Efficiency Standards (NVES) helped sharpen the large SUV's sticker price. The change in tune bodes well for forthcoming ID.4 and ID.5 electric car pricing.

The new Touareg’s facelift is fairly visual and mainly keeps to the details. There are new ‘click clack’ LED light signatures connected to the latest HD Matrix LED lights with 38,000 individual diodes.

Fresh light signatures at the rear with a full-width LED bar and illuminated emblem, tidier front and rear bumper designs and fresh alloy wheel designs complete the look.

The 170TDI is now $86,790 before on-road costs – that’s $10,970 cheaper than before when including the previously optional $8700 ‘Innovision’ 15-inch multimedia touchscreen.

Further new features include ‘Coventry’ 19-inch alloy wheels, open pore wood cabin trims, road sign assist, wireless Apple CarPlay, 360-degree camera and parking speed AEB.

A 3.0-litre turbo-diesel V6 producing 170kW/500Nm is allied to an eight-speed automatic and full-time four-wheel drive.

Black Vienna leather upholstery, heated front seat with power adjustment, power tailgate, dual-zone climate control, wireless charging pad, five USB-C charge points and steel spring suspension with passive dampers round out the specification.

The 210TDI is available in Elegance trim for $99,990 before on-road costs and brings ‘Braga’ 20-inch alloy wheels and air suspension with adaptive dampers along with an extra 40kW and 100Nm of grunt.

Inside, the Elegance’s seats are ventilated with a massage function and can be covered in ‘Mistral’ cream leather upholstery upon request.

The R-Line ($109,990 before on-road costs) gets a sporty exterior treatment, three-spoke steering wheel with perforated leather upholstery, black headliner, rear privacy glass, aluminium cabin inserts and upmarket ‘Puglia’ leather upholstery.

Rear-wheel steer and active roll stabilisation aid the R-Line's cornering prowess.

Volkswagen’s new plug-in hybrid Touareg R flagship is its most powerful production vehicle ever, producing 340kW and 700Nm. Its price was revealed earlier, with a $129,990 sticker.

It loses active roll stabilisation and rear-wheel steer but picks up a sunroof, black 22-inch ‘Estoril’ alloy wheels and 51km of electric-only driving range.

All models are certified to tow a 3500kg braked load. The Touareg range is available to order now.
