Will this be Holden's electric ute? GM confirms EV pick-up for 2021 launch

GM is climbing aboard the electric ute train.

GM will be joining the electric ute party, with the automotive giant confirming its first all-electric pick-up will hit the market in 2021.

The news comes on the same day Tesla boss Elon Musk is set to reveal his own electric truck, and so smacks of a well-timed spoiler from GM, but it's huge news nonetheless.

Details are thin on the ground for now, but GM CEO Mary Barra was busy talking up the new truck's capabilities when announcing the timing at an investor conference in New York.

“General Motors understands truck buyers and ... people who are new coming into the truck market,” she said, according Reuters. “It will be a very capable truck, I’m pretty excited about it.”

It's also not yet known whether the new electric ute will be a version of the Colorado family - like the new ZR2 model pictured here - or wear an all-new badge. But given Holden gets its Colorado truck from Thailand, rather than the USA, and all-new model would improve its chances of coming to Australia.

The news also follows reports GM is plotting an all-new range of premium-focussed electric utes, with this new truck to lead the charge from 2021.
