Toyota Celica to return as electric or hydrogen sports car with Subaru twin! GR 86 and GR Supra getting company soon: report

Toyota will reportedly add a third sports coupe to its line-up in the near future, with the Celica nameplate set to be revived for the new model, which will have either all-electric or hydrogen power.

According to Best Car Web, Toyota recently re-registered ‘Celica’ as a trademark in North America, which prompted the Japanese publication to approach its secret source that’s close to the brand’s product planning and research and development (R&D) divisions.

This person claimed that an electrified sports car is being co-developed by Toyota and Subaru, with their working relationship having already delivered the GR 86 and BRZ sports coupes, and bZ4X and Solterra mid-size SUVs in recent times.

They added that the new model in question is set to be named Celica, which would mean Toyota is indeed looking to revive the series that came to an end in 2006 after seven generations in 36 years.

The insider also mentioned the eighth-generation Celica might not be an all-electric model, which Best Car Web speculated it could be, given Toyota is planning to launch seven such vehicles by 2025, at least some of which will use it and Subaru’s new dedicated platform.

Instead, they suggested Toyota is exploring the possibility of all-electric powertrains not being the only option in the future, with research underway on hydrogen sports cars, one which could instead have the Celica badging – if it comes to fruition.

Needless to say, time will tell what form the new Celica takes, if any, but it’s clear Toyota is still keen to add more sports coupes to its line-up while expanding the emerging GR performance sub-brand to other body-styles. Stay tuned.
