New Range Rover Velar 2021 detailed: BMW X5, Audi Q7 rival cuts variants, adds new engines

Land Rover has trimmed down the Range Rover Velar line-up from 13 variants to five for the 2021 model year, with examples of the new luxury SUV hitting Australian showrooms from March.

Only three engine options – the carryover P250, and new P400 and D200 – will be available across the five permutations, all of which are now clad in R-Dynamic styling.

Prices kick off at $87,000 before on-road costs for the P250, shaving $648 from the outgoing R-Dynamic equivalent, Land Rover Australia is still yet to fully detail equipment levels.

What is known, is that the P250 will still be powered by the 184kW/365Nm 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder carried over from its predecessor.

Driveline details were also not divulged by Land Rover Australia, but an eight-speed automatic and four-wheel-drive system underpins the 2020 Velar P250.

The 2021 Velar range will also be bolstered by the introduction of a new 3.0-litre twin-charged straight-six Ingenium petrol engine punching out 194kW/550Nm, which was first seen on the mechanically related Jaguar F-Pace.

Dubbed P400, this Velar variant can scoot from zero to 100km/h in just 5.5 seconds thanks to its all-paw grip.

Paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system and start/stop engine technology, Land Rover is also promising “reduced fuel consumption and heightened refinement” in the P400, though economy figures are yet to be revealed.

Diesel engines are also overhauled and consolidated with the introduction of the mild-hybrid 150kW 2.0-litre D200 that sips just 6.3 litres per 100km, which replaces the D180, D240 and D300 options from before.

Aside from engines, the 2021 Velar line-up also scores the latest Pivi Pro multimedia system, active road noise cancellation and cabin air filtration, while adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and wade sensing are now standard fare.

Full pricing and specification details are expected closer to the new Velar’s on-sale date.
