There is life in diesel yet.
BMW is adding a diesel variant to its X3 SUV range later this year, despite many brands ditching the fuel altogether.
The X3 40d xDrive will join the petrol-powered X3 20 and M50 and the plug-in hybrid X3 30e in its local line-up.
The X3 40d is powered by a grunty 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder motor with mild hybrid assistance that makes 210kW and 670Nm, which is 15kW and 50Nm over the previous 30d it replaces.
That extra beef means its 0-100km/h time drops by 0.4 seconds to a spritely 5.4 seconds. And like the rest of the X3 range the 40d is all-wheel-drive only.
It is priced from $108,900 (before on-road costs), which is a jump of about $6000 compared to the old X3 30d.
BMW Australia said you get plenty of extra kit for the cash.

Some of the highlights include 20-inch alloy wheels, M Sport brakes with blue calipers, adaptive suspension, auto tailgate, LED headlights and acoustic glazing on the windows for a quieter cabin.
Inside there is a 14.9-inch digital driver display, a 12.3-inch curved central multimedia screen and a head-up display that projects vital information such as travelling speed onto the windscreen in front of the driver.
A heated M Sport Steering wheel is standard, as is heating for the front and second row seats and a ventilation function for the front seats.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto combine with a charging pad for cordless connectivity.
A panoramic sunroof and manual sun shades in the rear round out the most notable items.
BMW expects the X3 40d to arrive in Australia late in the third quarter or sometime from September onwards.
