What will the highly-anticipated Polestar 7 be?

Due from about 2026, should we expect an MG 4-sized hatch? A seven-seater EV SUV as per the imminent Hyundai Ioniq 7? An electric dual-cab pick-up like a Rivian R1T? Or maybe something else entirely?

Ever since it was flagged earlier this year as an ‘indirect replacement’ for the company’s original EV model, the Polestar 2, by CEO, Thomas Ingenlath, widespread speculation has kicked off over whether the newcomer will even again be a Tesla Model 3 competitor.

“(We) will not replace the Polestar 2 with a Polestar 2,” he told UK publication Autocar on April 3, adding that the company will avoid being “boxed into” a category just because that’s what normally happens.

To help get that point across, the 2’s ‘successor’ will simply gain the next available number sequence, which – after the Polestar 3 large SUV, Polestar 4 midsized SUV coupe, Polestar 5 luxury grand-touring sedan and Polestar 6 convertible sports car – makes it the Polestar 7.

Despite sitting on a completely different electric vehicle (EV) architecture with a raised crossover body and higher pricing, the Polestar 4 SUV coupe does overlap with the slightly-smaller Polestar 2 liftback in positioning.

Given how the Polestar 4 is charged with taking over from the Polestar 2 as the company’s far-more-mainstream volume seller when sales commence from the second half of this year, it is unlikely that the Polestar 7 will be anything remotely close to its older sibling.

So, with all this in mind, we tried to find out, asking every available Polestar executive at the recent Polestar 3 and Polestar 4 global launch.

It seems that the Polestar 7 will not be a small SUV version of the Volvo EX30 – a model that uses the Polestar 4’s SEA EV architecture amongst other things - despite the large market potential and strong initial response to the mother brand’s first compact EV crossover.

The Polestar 3 is a large yet stylish five-seat SUV.

“It won’t be an A-segment (small hatch or SUV-sized) vehicle,” according to Polestar Head of Product Comms, Brent Ellis. “We have already said that there will not be a Polestar below the 2 in size.”

Polestar really isn’t doing anything by the book.

The P4 is expected to be Polestar's global bestseller.

And while a seven-seater SUV to sit above the Polestar 3 might seem to make sense in isolation, the latter’s very close association with Volvo’s coming EX90 EV SUV flagship that shares the same SPA2 architecture probably makes a three-row version unlikely.

Why? One of the ways Geely likes to separate its Swedish brands is to make Volvo more practical and family-orientated and Polestar sportier, sleeker and more driving-enthusiast focused.

This does not leave much else. With overall Polestar 2 sales trailing initial expectations since launching internationally in 2020 another Tesla Model 3 sedan-esque model is probably out of the question.

Interestingly, asked if an electric dual-cab ute would be in consideration – a somewhat far-fetched notion as there is no precedent for this type of vehicle from any Swedish carmaker but an intriguing prospect for Australian, North and South American, southern African and some Asian consumers – the response was unexpected.

“It is not out of the question,” Ellis remarked, albeit with a half-smile. “We look at everything and if that is where consumers are moving towards, why would we not look at it.”

OK, so don’t hold your breath for a Cybertruck alternative just yet from the Swedes.

The point he and Ingenlath were both making is that Polestar does not have to follow established norms in bringing breakthrough new models to market.

He wrote for several motoring publications and was ABC Youth radio Triple J's "all things automotive" correspondent from 2001 to 2003. He rejoined John Mellor in early 2003 and has been with GoAutoMedia as a senior product and industry journalist ever since. With an eye for detail and a vast knowledge base of both new and used cars Byron lives and breathes motoring. His encyclopedic knowledge of cars was acquired from childhood by reading just about every issue of every car magazine ever to hit a newsstand in Australia. The child Byron was the consummate car spotter, devoured and collected anything written about cars that he could lay his hands on and by nine had driven more imaginary miles at the wheel of the family Ford Falcon in the driveway at home than many people drive in a lifetime. The teenage Byron filled in the agonising years leading up to getting his driver's license by reading the words of the leading motoring editors of the country and learning what they look for in a car and how to write it. In short, Byron loves cars and knows pretty much all there is to know about every vehicle released during his lifetime as well as most of the ones that were around before then.
