2021 Toyota Prius pricing and specs detailed: Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid rival goes up in cost for second time in two months

The Prius has been given its second price rise in two months, and this time there isn’t a corresponding update.

For the second time in two months, Toyota Australia has increased the pricing of its pioneering hybrid model, the Prius small hatchback.

Unlike the previous, $1300 range-wide price rise, this $500 one hasn’t arrived alongside an update with extra standard equipment to compensate buyers for their extra spend.

Instead, a Toyota Australia spokesperson confirmed to CarsGuide these increased prices were wholly prompted by external market forces, including exchange-rate pressures.

As before, two versions of the Prius are available: an unnamed entry-level variant and the i-Tech flagship, which are now priced from $38,365 and $45,350 plus on-road costs respectively.

The aforementioned update expanded the Prius’ suite of advanced driver-assist systems with autonomous emergency braking (AEB) that detects vehicles and pedestrians (day and night) as well as cyclists (day), while steering assist and road sign recognition were also new.

For reference, the ‘self-charging’ hybrid powertrain in the Prius combines a 1.8-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine running on the Atkinson cycle with two electric motors for a system power output of 90kW.

This combination exclusively drives the front wheels via an electric continuously variable automatic transmission (e-CVT) in the Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid rival.
