2014 Nissan Qashqai detailed

The Nissan Qashqai SUV lands in Australia with more interior space and technology than the Dualis it replaces.

The Nissan Dualis has always been known as the Qashqai in Europe, with Australia being the only market to use the Dualis badge.

However, with the new second-generation model, Nissan Australia has made the decision to adopt the Qashqai global nameplate .

The new version is slightly longer and wider than before and cargo space has swollen by 20-litres to 430 while the starting price is marginally slimmer at $25,850.

Unlike the outgoing model, there isn't a seven-seat option and the Qashqai is now front-wheel drive only. Buyers wanting all-wheel drive and seven-seat capability will have to opt for the larger X-Trail.

The Qashqai is available with two different engine options, kicking off with a 106kW/200Nm 2.0-litre petrol engine in ST and Ti grades,  with combined fuel consumption of 6.9L/100km when paired with the CVT automatic transmission. A 96kW/320Nm 1.6-litre turbodiesel is available in TS and TL grades,  and boasts fuel consumption of 4.9L/100km.

The petrol powertrain can be had with either a six-speed manual or CVT automatic transmission, while the diesel is only available with the CVT auto.

The entry level petrol-powered Qashqai ST comes with 17-inch alloys, LED daytime running lights, rear view camera and Nissan-Connect smartphone connectivity.

Front, side and curtain airbags, along with stability and traction control are also standard and all versions have been awarded a maximum five star ANCAP safety rating this week.

The diesel-powered TS is priced from $33,200 adds automatic wipers, push button start, dual-zone climate control and stop-start technology on top of the standard equipment fitted to the ST.

While slightly less expensive than the diesel TS at $32,490 with a manual gearbox, the Ti is loaded with features. On top the TS model's standard equipment list the Ti gets a 7-inch touch screen, satnav, 360-degree camera system, panoramic roof, leather-accented seat trim, heated front seats, blind spot warning system and lane departure warning. The TS is also fitted as standard with an automatic CVT transmission.

The range-topping Qashqai TL is priced from $37,990 and uses the CVT transmission fitted with stop-start technology as standard.

All Qashqai models also come with Active Ride Control which Nissan claims enhances ride comfort by applying the brakes to individual wheels after a bump has been hit to smooth the ride. An active steering system also allows drivers to choose between sport and normal steering modes which offer varying wheel weight and sensitivity.

The new Nissan Qashqai is on sale now covered by a three-year/100,000km warranty with capped price servicing.
