Better known in Australia as the Kombi, Volkswagen's Transporter range has been an integral part of the brand's commercial arm since the 1950s, as well as a big part of local folklore.

Probably best known for the rear-engined, air-cooled T1 and T2, the Transporter was thrust into the modern world with the launch of the T4 in 1990, which saw a water-cooled engine moved to the front of the van.

The latest version, the T6, launched in 2015, and heralded derivatives including the Multivan and Caravelle, ranging from the $45,890 Transporter Tdi250 Swb to the $68,090 Transporter Tdi450 Lwb 4Motion as well as the retro-inspired Generation, which was sold in two-tone guise meant to mimic the original Kombi of the 1950s.

Volkswagen Transporter FAQs

I am looking for a used van... do you have any recommendations?

Rather than concentrate on a particular brand, the best advice is to find a vehicle with a full service history and signs that it has lived an easy life. Too often, commercial vehicles like vans are bought by their first owner and used and abused. They’re nearly always purchased with a job in mind, and that job can often wreck them or at least shorten their lives.

Sometimes, the down-time associated with proper servicing means that maintenance is skipped, other times the sheer weight of the cargo being carried puts a lot of strain on mechanical components. A van that has been used by, say, a pool chemical company might have been exposed to highly corrosive chemicals every day of its life and could be hiding lots of rust. Even a florist’s van might have every nook and cranny filled with potting mix, waiting to become damp and start the rusting process.

Another good idea is to buy a van that has already been converted to a camper. This conversion is not an inexpensive process, so letting the previous owner spend the money is a terrific concept. Keep an eye on the classifieds for a van that has done a tour of duty with a grey nomad or van-lifer, and is now up for sale as the owner moves on to something new.

Which big family cars do you recommend?

I don’t believe there’s an SUV that would meet your needs. The best and most sensible solution would be a peoplemover, like a Toyota Tarago, Hyundai iMax, VW Transporter.

No help from VW

Most manufacturers have what they call "Filled for Life" transmissions, but they can still be serviced. Like you we believe VW should be more transparent when it comes to problems instead of adopting a head-in-the-sand approach, as they appear to do when confronted with a problem.

Volkswagen Transporter Accessories

Standard equipment on the 2026 Volkswagen Transporter van includes 16-inch steel wheels, LED headlights and tail-lights, keyless ignition, climate control, cloth-trimmed seats, heated front seats and a four-speaker sound system.

Volkswagen Transporter Seats

The 2026 Volkswagen Transporter comes standard with a three-seat layout. There is a separate, multi-way adjustable seat for the driver and a connected bench for two passengers, with less adjustment.

Volkswagen Transporter Colours

Volkswagen is offering a wider variety of colours for the 2026 Transporter. There are nine to choose from - 'Clear White', 'Light Grey Metallic', 'Stone Grey', 'Graphite Dust Metallic', 'Dark Indigo Blue', 'Mightnight Black Metallic', 'Warm Green Metallic', 'Intensive Red' and 'Mid Blue Metallic'.

Volkswagen Transporter Interior

The 2026 Volkswagen Transporter cabin is well designed. There is a new 12-inch digital instrument display and a 13-inch multimedia touchscreen taking prominence on the dashboard. The multimedia system includes built-in navigation plus wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as digital radio. There’s also a wireless charging pad and seven USB ports spread around the cabin. There’s plenty of storage spots, a with a large shelf on top of the dashboard and multiple in-door shelves.

Volkswagen Transporter Engine

The 2026 Volkswagen Transporter is available, for the first time, with the choice of diesel, electric and plug-in hybrid.

The 2.0-litre four-cylinder TDI makes 125kW/390Nm. It’s available either with front-wheel drive or Volkswagen’s '4Motion' all-wheel drive set-up.

The electric Transporter has a 210kW/415Nm electric motor and is rear-wheel drive.

The PHEV won't be available until 2026, but when it does arrive Volkswagen has confirmed it will be producing 171kW/205Nm.

Volkswagen Transporter Boot Space

The 2026 Volkswagen Trasnsporter is 150mm longer and the standard wheelbase has been stretched by 100mm, compared to the six-generation, which allows for even more cargo space.

Thanks to the extra length, the SWB has a 2.6m load length and 5.8 cubic metres of cargo space, while the LWB has 3.0m in length and 6.8 cubic metres. There’s also a steel fixed partition with window, window grille and load through hatch to stretch the usable space even more.

Volkswagen Transporter Speed

Volkswagen doesn't list a 0-100km/h time or top speed for the 2026 Transporter. Both the TDI and EV models would likely take around 10 seconds to accelerate from standstill to 100km/h and will likely hit 150km/h if needed.

Volkswagen Transporter Range

Claimed fuel economy for the 2026 Volkswagen Transporter TDI is 7.9L/100km for the 2WD and 8.4L/100km for the AWD. With its 70-litre fuel tank it has a theoretical driving range of 886km for the 2WD and 833km for the '4Motion' AWD. Volkswagen claims the electric Transporter has driving range of 330km.
