Taking shape! 2024 Toyota Camry around the corner, here's what to expect from the Mazda6 rivalling sedan

The next Toyota Camry is due to be revealed this year, with global reports leading to an imagining of how the next version of Toyota's once top-selling car might look.

Created by the digital artists who work with Kolesa.ru, this render is probably not far off what you can expect to see from the next Toyota Camry, based on current evolutions of Toyota's design language.

The render uses design elements based on the look of the current Toyota Crown, which debuted last year and has, in the past, shared some similarities with the Camry.

The Crown, which is not sold in Australia, wears a similar front headlight bar and large grille, but in its current iteration has moved away from the traditional sedan shape and moved into a taller quasi-crossover SUV size.

The Crown also features a new powertrain - Toyota's 2.4-litre turbocharged petrol hybrid 'dual-boost' which makes 260kW and 550Nm.

Whether this powertrain makes it to the Camry is yet to be determined, but Australian Camry buyers can be sure that the next version of the nation's most popular petrol-powered sedan won't feature a V6.

The six-cylinder Camry was killed off in 2021, when sales dropped to almost nil. Instead, a heavy focus on hybrid-powered variants, all four-cylinder petrol, became the norm. Expect that to continue for the next generation as Toyota focuses on 'carbon reduction' rather than diving right into full battery electric cars.

It's likely to be built on a version of the current TNGA-K platform, given how prolific it continues to be in the Toyota stable.

Given the shrinking sedan segment and the sliding popularity of the Camry - which dropped below 10,000 annual sales in 2022 - it's possible Toyota will streamline the range to appeal to fleets and passenger transport buyers, which could even make the Camry hybrid-only.

If the new Camry debuts after the middle of 2023, we won't see it land in Australia until sometime in the first half of 2024. When that happens, expect to see its starting price shift north of its current $39,990.
