Skoda Karoq Scout to make Paris motor show debut

Skoda's Karoq SUV is about to get a little more rugged, with a more off-road focused Scout version to be unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in October.

The Scout badge is typically applied to the most adventure-ready models in Skoda's lineup - though in the case of the Karoq, we're talking light duties rather than conquering Mount Kosciuszko.

But the Scout-badged Karoq will arrive with all-wheel drive as standard, as well as a tweaked exterior designed to make the mid-size SUV look more off-road ready.

Globally, the Scout will be offered with three engine options; a 1.5-litre petrol engine, as well as a 2.0-litre diesel engine in two states of tune. Exactly what that means for Australia, though, is yet to be seen, with the Karoq launched exclusively with the petrol engine and two-wheel drive in Australia earlier this year.

Outside, the Karoq Scout gets new chrome or silver body highlights, as well as more exaggerated (and plastic-framed) wheel arches and new 18- or 19-inch alloy wheels. Tinted windows, new (and Scout-badged) seat designs and stainless steel pedals also arrive as standard fit.

Inside, the (optional) Virtual Cockpit system - a huge digital screen that completely replaces the analogue dials in the driver's binnacle - is now equipped with new off-road settings, while international cars will also arrive with a Wi-Fi hotspot.

Skoda is yet to confirm the Scout for Australia, let alone talk about pricing for this newly rugged Karoq, but we will keep on them as the Paris show approaches. So as always, watch this space.

Andrew Chesterton should probably hate cars. From his hail-damaged Camira that looked like it had spent a hard life parked at the end of Tiger Woods' personal driving range, to the Nissan Pulsar Reebok that shook like it was possessed by a particularly mean-spirited demon every time he dared push past 40km/h, his personal car history isn't exactly littered with gold. But that seemingly endless procession of rust-savaged hate machines taught him something even more important; that cars are more than a collection of nuts, bolts and petrol. They're your ticket to freedom, a way to unlock incredible experiences, rolling invitations to incredible adventures. They have soul. And so, somehow, the car bug still bit. And it bit hard. When "Chesto" started his journalism career with News Ltd's Sunday and Daily Telegraph newspapers, he covered just about everything, from business to real estate, courts to crime, before settling into state political reporting at NSW Parliament House. But the automotive world's siren song soon sounded again, and he begged anyone who would listen for the opportunity to write about cars. Eventually they listened, and his career since has seen him filing car news, reviews and features for TopGear, Wheels, Motor and, of course, CarsGuide, as well as many, many others. More than a decade later, and the car bug is yet to relinquish its toothy grip. And if you ask Chesto, he thinks it never will.
