Hotter Toyota Corolla on the cards

The new Corolla is just about to be launched in Australia – we’ll have drive impressions for you on Friday – but there’s already talk of a performance model being considered to join the line-up.

However it will depend on the health of European sales for the Corolla hatchback, known as the Auris in overseas markets.

Toyota’s product planning chief, Karl Schlicht, told UK website Autocar that while a performance version is “not a number one priority”, Toyota has “room to experiment” with the car.

However he said any plans for a performance version would rely on the standard Corolla/Auris sales in Europe managing solid results in the face of economic woes that have seen the car market in a downturn.

“The key thing for us is to run a good business first, and then start having fun later,” Schlicht is cited as saying in the report.
