2022 Volkswagen SUV range pricing: Increases across most model lines as VW prepares for performance SUV onslaught

The Tiguan medium SUV’s pricing has gone up by between $900 and $1200 per variant.

Volkswagen has kicked off the new year with a price increase across its SUV range from the T-Cross all the way up to the Touareg.

The baby T-Cross light SUV has dropped to two variants with the deletion of the mid-grade CityLife and pricing has gone up by $650 for the base 85TSI Life to $29,850 before on-road costs and tops out at $32,800, a $700 increase, for the 85TSI Style.

All T-Cross variants use an 85kW/200Nm 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol engine paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic and they are front-wheel drive (FWD).

It has quickly become VW’s second best-selling model behind the Amarok ute, according to VFACTS sales figures.

The one-size-larger T-Roc is up by $800 for the 110TSI Style ($35,500) and $900 for the flagship 140TSI Sport all-wheel drive (AWD) which is now $42,700.

This is not the pricing for the facelifted version of the T-Roc that is expected to arrive in the third quarter of 2022. A T-Roc R will join the range this year powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine delivering 221kW/400Nm, driving all four wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

All six Tiguan grades are up by between $900 and $1200 apiece and the range now starts from $41,490 before on-roads for the turbo-petrol 110TSI Life FWD and tops out at $57,490 for the diesel-powered 147TDI R-Line AWD.

The mid-life update for the Tiguan landed in Australian showrooms in early 2021 ushering in a new face for the popular medium SUV. Like the T-Roc, an R version of the Tiguan is heading Down Under this year.

Pricing for the seven-seat Tiguan Allspace has not increased for 2022, although the Wolfsburg edition has been dropped.

VW’s large SUV contender, the Touareg, has also lost the Wolfsburg edition and prices are up by between $2000 and $2400 per variant. The Volvo XC90 rival now starts from $84,990 for the 170TDI AWD, while the 210TDI R-Line is now $112,690.

These variants will be joined soon by the new Touareg R plug-in hybrid that pumps out 340kW/700Nm. Pricing is yet to be announced but it will be the flagship variant with a pricetag north of $110,000.

Calling out the make and model of every single car he saw as a toddler might have challenged his parents’ patience, but it was clearly a starting point for Tim Nicholson’s journey into automotive journalism. Tim launched the program, Fender Bender, on community radio station JOY 94.9 during completion of his Master of Arts (Media and Communications). This led to an entry role at industry publication GoAuto, before eventually taking the role of Managing Editor. A stint as RACV’s Motoring Editor – including being an Australia’s Best Cars judge – provided a different perspective to automotive media, before leading him to CarsGuide where he started as a Contributing Journalist in September 2021, and transitioned to Senior Editor in April 2022, before becoming Managing Editor in December 2022.
