Popular Volkswagens go hybrid at last
By Tom White · 18 Feb 2026
Volkswagen has finally announced pricing for key plug-in hybrid versions of its strong-selling Tiguan mid-size SUV, and its larger Tayron spin-off.The German giant has made the new ‘eHybrid’ versions of each car available in two variants at two power levels for the mid-grade Elegance and top-spec R-Line.The eHybrid system consists of a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder, turbo-petrol engine, mated to an electric motor for combined outputs of either 150kW for the Elegance grade or 200kW for the R-Line.The system uses a 19.7kWh battery pack, which grants either car a fully-electric driving range of between 113-117km according to the usually more accurate WLTP measuring standard. On top of that, the Tiguan and Tayron eHybrids are equipped with DC charging at a maximum speed of 40kW allowing a charge time of around half an hour on a fast connector.Starting from $64,590 before on-road costs for the Tiguan 150TSI eHybrid Elegance grade, the plug-in hybrid represents a $3000 hike over the equivalent 150TSI 2.0-litre turbo-petrol AWD version or a $13,500 hike over the base 110TSI Elegance 1.4-litre FWD version.Meanwhile both the mid-size plug-in hybrid SUVs are available with a similar list of optional equipment as their combustion equivalents. The Tiguan eHybrid offers 490 litres of boot capacity, a significant reduction on the combustion version’s 652L capacity, while the Tayron’s boot capacity is reduced from 885L to 705L.See full pricing in the table below for the Tiguan and Tayron range but with pricing between $64,590 and $76,550, both mid-sizers are a way off the more affordable end of the spectrum, which is largely populated by newer Chinese brands.BYD, for example, offers its Sealion 5 from just $33,990, before on-roads, while the Chery Tiggo 7 Super Hybrid can be had from $39,990.However, the pair of plug-in hybrid Volkswagens will present more of a problem for more traditional brands, like Mitsubishi with its (outgoing) Outlander PHEV starting from $57,290, and Kia with its Sorento PHEV starting from $71,130.The PHEV mid-size space will also be shaken up later in 2026 with the highly anticipated arrival of the plug-in hybrid RAV4. It is also priced competitively for a mainstream brand, with the XSE 2WD from $58,840 before on-roads.Volkswagen was embattled locally over the course of 2025, ending the year down 20.6 per cent on 2024. It is facing increased competition from its traditional rivals as well as rising Chinese semi-premium and premium brands. The German giant was also awaiting many model updates over the course of the year which saw demand wane for outgoing versions of some of its most popular models.2026 Volkswagen Tiguan and Tayron eHybrid price (before on-roads)

Top 5 countries making the cars Aussies love the most!
By Laura Berry · 11 Jan 2026
It’s 2026, and this year will mark a decade since Ford ended manufacturing in Australia, with Holden and Toyota also ending local production a year later. So, who’s making the cars we love now? And by who, we mean which countries? Here are the top five countries that made our favourite cars in 2025.Australia’s love of European cars is ongoing but that appears to be coming off the boil slightly with 2025 sales of cars built in Germany dropping to 54,905, down by 2639 units on the year before.Doing the heavy lifting are models such as the Volkswagen Tiguan and Golf, along with the Mercedes-Benz GLC and GLA SUVs which are made in Germany for Australia. It’s unlikely Aussies will stop treating themselves to cars from Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Volkswagen anytime soon, if ever. But as you will see the gap between prestige-niche (prest-niche?) and mainstream models could grow increasingly larger as Chinese offerings head further upmarket while keeping prices low.Hyundai and Kia are the big two Korean carmakers, with KGM (formerly SsangYong) struggling but still hanging on. Between the three they made 149,966 of the cars bought by Aussies in 2025. That’s down from 157,760 in 2024.Australians love models such as the Hyundai Kona and Santa Fe and Kia Sportage which are all made in Korea for our market. The drop in the number of Korean-made cars we bought could be attributed to the biggest mover in the top five manufacturers. Enter China.Number three today, number two tomorrow? Possibly sooner. The popularity of Chinese-made cars accelerated dramatically from 2024 to 2025, the overall number going from 176,159 to 221,699. Yes, an increase of 45,540 cars (+26 per cent), almost the total amount of German-made cars sold in 2025. Impressive.Chinese-made models such as the BYD Shark 6 ute, GWM Haval Jolion and MG ZS SUV have been snapped up by Aussies in their tens of thousands. As with any race, the battle between third and second place is often more riveting than what’s going on in first and China is breathing down the neck of Thailand right now.It might surprise you (or not at all) to know that Thailand came in second place for 2025. But only just, with 249,958 cars made for Aussies, which is down from 272,139 in 2024.What cars does Thailand make? Pretty much every ute on sale in Australia and utes are hugely popular here.Yep, from the Ford Ranger, Isuzu D-Max and Mazda BT-50 to the Mitsubishi Triton, Nissan Navara and Toyota HiLux. Thailand is a ute powerhouse.Japan is our winner for 2025 as the country which makes more cars that we buy than any other nation. Japan made 358,981 of the cars Aussies bought and that’s up from 241,296 in 2024. Carrying the heavy end of this big number is Toyota with firm Aussie favourites such as the RAV4, Corolla, Camry, Corolla Cross, Land Cruiser and Prado.By now you know the Toyota HiLux is made in Thailand, but did you know the Kluger is built in the United States for Australia? You do now.

New family SUV hero landing soon
By Dom Tripolone · 31 Jan 2025
Volkswagen’s new Tiguan mid-size SUV is headed Down Under this May.The family-focused SUV brings updated styling, engines and a heavy amount of standard equipment as it gears up to battle the big selling Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5, Nissan X-Trail and Kia Sportage. The German brand hasn’t revealed local prices yet but it is likely there won’t be a massive jump over the outgoing model, despite advancements across the board. Buyers should expect prices to start below $50,000.Volkswagen will launch the Tiguan with a five-pronged variant offensive, starting with the 110TSI in entry-level Life and fully-loaded Elegance grades. These two versions use the carry-over four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that makes 110kW and 250Nm.This is followed by the 150TSI that comes in R-Line and Elegance trim lines. A new 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine makes 150kW and 320Nm. This is paired with all-wheel drive. The Tiguan 195TSI R-Line tops the range with its 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine producing a Golf GTI matching 195kW and 400Nm. It has all-wheel drive as standard. All engines are paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. There are no hybrid options for now, but Volkswagen does sell mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid alternatives in Europe.Volkswagen has stacked its entry-level Tiguan 110TSI Life variant with standard equipment. Some of the highlights are 19-inch alloy wheels, power tailgate, wireless device chargers, a 12.9-inch multimedia touchscreen and 360-degree camera. All Tiguans come with a comprehensive list of safety equipment that covers all the bases.Elegance models up the list of goodies with upgraded LED lights and light strips on the front and rear, leather trimmed seats, power adjustable front seats that have heating, ventilation and massage functions. If you want a head-up display, premium sound system and panoramic sunroof you’ll need to add the optional packs.Step-up to the 150TSI Elegance and the stereo and head-up display become standard and it gets matrix LED headlights, dynamic rear indicators, a big 15-inch central screen and adaptive chassis control that provides different driving modes. The R-Line trim brings sportier exterior highlights and different 19-inch alloy wheels, sports seats and cloth upholstery as well as the dynamic chassis control and progressive steering to elevate the drive experience. It sits below the 150TSI Elegance and goes without the head-up display and premium stereo as standard.Top-of-the-range Tiguan 195TSI R-Line gets the beefier engine and all the equipment trimmings. It combines the features of the two 150TSI variants and adds a few more niceties such as 20-inch alloy wheels. The new Tiguan is bigger than before and has a roomier cabin and one of the biggest boots in its class at 652-litre with all seats up.
