The Jaecoo J7 was first revealed in 2023 as the flagship model of Chery’s new Jaecoo brand, positioned as a premium mid-size SUV with a focus on urban buyers. It shared its platform with the Chery Omoda 5 but was given a tougher design and higher ground clearance. In some overseas markets the model was also known simply as the Chery Jaecoo J7, reflecting the parent company’s branding strategy.
The early years of the Jaecoo J7 saw the rollout of petrol and plug-in hybrid options, aimed at markets in Asia, Europe and the Middle East. Chery used the model to test demand for more upmarket features, adding technology and safety systems that were new to the brand. The J7’s role as a standalone nameplate helped Jaecoo establish itself apart from Chery’s mainstream passenger cars.
By 2025 the Jaecoo J7 had entered right-hand-drive markets including Australia. It competes in the same space as the Haval H6 and MG HS, offering a Chinese-built alternative in the mid-size SUV segment. With production continuing in China, the Jaecoo J7 remains the brand’s core international model, positioned as both an entry point and a halo vehicle for Jaecoo’s global expansion.
The Jaecoo J7 is available in five colours - Forest Green, Ocean Blue, Lunar Silver, Carbon Black and Arctic White.
The flagship Ridge variant also enjoys the option of adding a black roof.
The interior of the Jaecoo J7 is cleanly styled with minimal fuss when it comes to accent panels or buttons. Most functions are accessed via the large 13.2-inch media display which takes centre stage on the dashboard.
Interior colour options are limited to black with a light grey headliner but higher grades enjoy a sunroof. The cabin features a modern and tech-focused aesthetic.
There are two powertrains available for the Jaecoo J7 with the option of front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive depending on the grade level (ICE variants only).
ICE vehicles have a 1.6L four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine which produces up to 137kW/275Nm and feature a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
PHEV vehicles pair a 1.5L four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine with a single electric motor and together they produce up to 255kW/525Nm.

The Jaecoo J7 is offered with five-seats in a 2/3 configuration. The front seats are powered and all grades enjoy synthetic leather upholstery.
The rear row has a 60/40 split fold with an armrest. Seat bases are thickly-padded in both rows and offer decent backrest support.
The boot space of the Jaecoo J7 varies between grade levels with the ICE base and mid-range grades offered with up to 584L with all seats in use and 1349L when the second row is folded.
PHEV grades and the flagship Ridge have a boot capacity of up to 500L with all seats in use or up to 1265L when the second row is folded. A powered tailgate is offered with higher grades.
There are no official 0-100km/h sprint times for the ICE or PHEV Jaecoo J7 variants but estimates could comfortably be projected at around 8.0 seconds. Top speeds are approximately 150km/h.
For Jaecoo J7 ICE variants, the claimed combined fuel cycle usage varies between 8.9 to 9.9L/100km, and they have a fuel tank capacity between 51L and 57L. This gives the ICE variants a theoretical driving range between 573km and 575km.
For PHEV variants, the claimed combined fuel cycle use is 1.0L/100km, with fuel tank capacity of 60L. Combined with an electric only driving range of up 90km (WLTP), they have a theoretical driving range of more than 1200km.
The Type 2 CCS charging port accepts up to 6.6kW on AC power and up to 40kW on fast DC power. On that type of DC charger you can go from 30 - 80 per cent in around 20 minutes. PHEV variants have a claimed energy consumption of 15.9kWh/100km.
