The premium ‘sibling’ brand to Chery, called Jaecoo, is about to launch in Australia.
While full details of its first model, the Jaecoo J7 mid-sized SUV are still to be confirmed, a media preview drive of one variant means there’s already some information and expectations we can count on.
Pending the brand’s full launch with more variants in late March here’s what we know so far.

We’re told the Jaecoo J7 will start from between $35,000 and $40,000 for its base ‘Core 2WD’ variant, while a higher-spec ‘Track 2WD’ variant will likely kick off from above $40,000.
There will also be at least two all-wheel drive variants, plus a front-wheel drive plug-in hybrid version, which might come soon after the launch if it’s not ready for sale by then.
And for the price, the list of features we’ve been supplied with even for the entry grade J7 Core is decent. On top of that, the brand’s styling is clearly aiming for premium vibes, even if the price tag isn’t.
Standard features include synthetic leather seats and trim, power-adjustable front seats, a 13.2-inch multimedia touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 10.25-inch driver display, automatic LED headlights, daytime running lights (DRLs) and tail-lights, even retracting door handles and interior ambient lighting.
The Track 2WD steps up from the Core 2WD, and as mentioned will likely start from more than $40,000.
It comes with extra kit like heated front seats, lights for the vanity mirrors, colour-selectable ambient lighting, dual-zone climate control, and an upgraded eight-speaker Sony sound system, a wireless phone charging pad. There’s also a power tailgate, 12-volt outlet in the boot, and acoustic glass for the windscreen.
Details like the warranty and servicing costs and timings are also yet to be finalised, as is a score from ANCAP, but a healthy list of the usual safety features for the Core 2WD includes AEB, emergency lane-keeping, departure warning and prevention, traffic jam assist, cruise assist, blind spot detection, rear collision alert and rear cross-traffic alert and braking, a door opening warning, speed limit information and control assist plus a driver monitoring system.
There’s also seven airbags (driver and front passenger, front side and front centre, as well as side curtain airbags) standard, though the Track 2WD adds an eighth for the driver’s knees.
The Track has extra features such as a surround view parking camera system, front and rear parking sensors plus a child safety lock for the rear doors.
Pricing and it size suggest the J7 might overlap with the Chery Tiggo 7, but the plan for the brand is a separate dealership network as well as targeting more style-focused buyers than the practical purchasers of the Chery brand.
Oh, and if you were wondering where ‘Jaecoo’ came from, apparently it’s a portmanteau of the German word ‘jaeger’ meaning hunter, and the English word ‘cool’.
