What do Superman and cars made of Cannabis have in common? Both are stronger than steel

By Georgia WatkinsGeorgia Watkins

Said to be 10 times stronger than steel, Henry Ford (of Ford Motor Company) created a car from Cannabis hemp in 1941.

More than 60 years later a Florida based environmentalist by the name of Bruce Michael Dietzen built his own Cannabis car based on a MX-5 chassis.

Ford came up with the idea during a steel shortage during World War II. Incidentally this is why the first Corvette was made from fibreglass, which continues today.

The original car is said to be made mostly of hemp with other natural materials like soybean, corn, sisal and flax used in the manufacturing process.

According to Dietzen, Ford’s Cannabis car was three times greener than today’s electric cars because of how it was made and fuelled. Ford not only built the car from hemp, but developed a hemp biofuel to make the car go!

Dietzen’s red sports car looks like a regular steel or fibreglass car, but is in fact made using a hefty 45kg of woven hemp making it strong enough to hold shape, and 10 times more dent resistant than steel (and significantly lghter).

Because it’s illegal to grow hemp crops in Florida, Dietzen had to import his hemp, already in woven form, from China.

Dietzen says the car is carbon neutral and believes hemp cars can reduce the C02 emissions and create a more sustainable manufacturing process.
