A late '70s Mercedes wagon wouldn't normally quicken pulses, but this '79 500TE long roof changes that idea.

Up for grabs RM Sothebys Youngtimer auction this is no diesel slug but a 5.0-litre V8-powered AMG hot rod!

Reported to have been a special order delivery costing an insane $52,000 (65,000 Deutsche Marks) when new, this is the W123 station wagon Mercedes-Benz should have offered.

Sothebys estimate it will sell for between $95,000-110,000 (€60,000-€70,000) in early April.

But, would you buy the hot rod Merc or one of the epic turbo Alpina BMWs up for grabs at the same auction? Let us know in the comments.
