VW Golf Bluemotion stars at show preview

Volkswagen Group staged the event to showcase a range of its show heroes but the two most important previews of all - the Golf GTi and Audi Q2 - were held back.

They will headline for Volkswagen when the action begins on the first press day of the show, competing for the spotlight with everything from the McLaren P1 supercar to the fourth-generation Renault Clio.

"This Paris show is occurring in turbulent times. A lot of people are saying this is the swansong for Europe, but the Volkswagen Group is countering this aggressively," says company chairman, Martin Winterkorn. "We offer mobility for all needs and requirements."

He says VW Group will bring more than 140 new models to showrooms in the next few years after spending more than $10 billion on research and development.

The highlights at the preview night ran all the way from a pair of motorcycles from Ducati - the newest member of the VW Group - to a Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse which is claimed to be the world's fastest open-topped car. It will hit 375km/h with the roof open and run to 410km/h with a glass roof panel in place.

At the other end of the scale, Volkswagen displayed a Bluemotion Golf with turbodiesel fuel economy of just 3.2 litres/100km and CO2 emissions of only 85 grams/kilometre.
